How to Follow the Mass

This book gives the unchanging Order of Mass. The parts that change each day (Introit, Collect, Epistle, Gradual, Gospel, Offertory, Secret, Communion and Postcommunion) are found in a daily missal or a parish handout; the rubrics here show where each one falls.

Latin is on the left and English on the right. Rubrics, the directions for what is done, are in red. Answers made by the server, and at a sung Mass by the choir and people, are in bold.

What you will see and hear. The priest uses three levels of voice. Parts the people or server answer, and parts sung at a High Mass, are said aloud; a few are said half-aloud so the server can follow; the rest, including the whole Canon, is said silently. Several times during Mass he raises his eyes briefly to the crucifix, at moments where the prayer itself speaks of looking up to God.

Postures. Customs differ from place to place; when in doubt, follow the people around you.

Orationes ante MissamPrayers Before Mass

Orationes ante Missam

Prayers Before Mass

These may be said privately while waiting for Mass to begin.

To the table of your most sweet banquet, loving Lord Jesus Christ, I, a sinner who presumes nothing on my own merits but trusts in your mercy and goodness, draw near with fear and trembling.

For my heart and body are stained by many sins, and I have not kept careful watch over my mind and tongue.

Ergo, o pia Deitas, o tremenda Maiestas, ego miser, inter angustias deprehensus, ad te fontem misericordiae recurro, ad te festino sanandus, sub tuam protectionem fugio. Amen.

Therefore, O loving Godhead, O awesome Majesty, I, wretched and hemmed in by distress, run back to you, the fountain of mercy; I hurry to you to be healed, and I take refuge under your protection. Amen.

p. 4
Praeparatio SacerdotisThe Priest's Vesting Prayers

Praeparatio Sacerdotis

The Priest's Vesting Prayers

Before Mass the priest washes his hands and puts on each vestment with a short prayer from the Missal. Knowing them helps us see the vestments as the armor and garments of the priestly office.

The alb
The alb

Washing the hands:

Give strength to my hands, O Lord, to wipe away every stain, that I may serve you without defilement of mind or body.

The amice, a linen cloth, first touched to the head and then laid on the shoulders:

Impone, Domine, capiti meo galeam salutis, ad expugnandos diabolicos incursus.

Place on my head, O Lord, the helmet of salvation, to repel the assaults of the devil.

The alb, the long white linen tunic:

Dealba me, Domine, et munda cor meum; ut, in Sanguine Agni dealbatus, gaudiis perfruar sempiternis.

Make me white, O Lord, and cleanse my heart, that, made white in the Blood of the Lamb, I may enjoy eternal delights.

The cincture, the cord tied at the waist:

The cincture
The cincture

Praecinge me, Domine, cingulo puritatis, et exstingue in lumbis meis humorem libidinis; ut maneat in me virtus continentiae et castitatis.

Gird me, O Lord, with the cincture of purity, and quench in me the fire of concupiscence, that the virtue of continence and chastity may abide in me.

The maniple, worn on the left forearm:

Merear, Domine, portare manipulum fletus et doloris; ut cum exsultatione recipiam mercedem laboris.

May I be worthy, O Lord, to bear the maniple of weeping and sorrow, that I may receive with joy the reward of my labor.

The stole, crossed over the breast:

The stole
The stole

Redde mihi, Domine, stolam immortalitatis, quam perdidi in praevaricatione primi parentis: et, quamvis indignus accedo ad tuum sacrum mysterium, merear tamen gaudium sempiternum.

Give back to me, O Lord, the stole of immortality which I lost through the sin of our first parents; and though I am unworthy to approach your sacred mystery, may I still be found worthy of everlasting joy.

The chasuble, the outer vestment:

The chasuble
The chasuble

Amen.

O Lord, who said, "My yoke is sweet and my burden light," grant that I may so carry this burden as to obtain your grace. Amen.

Asperges meThe Sprinkling with Holy Water

Asperges me

The Sprinkling with Holy Water

On Sundays before the principal Mass, the priest sprinkles the altar, the ministers and the people with holy water while the choir sings. In Paschaltide the Vidi aquam is sung instead.

Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.

You will sprinkle me with hyssop, O Lord, and I shall be clean; you will wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your great mercy.

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The antiphon Asperges me is repeated. The priest then says:

℣. Ostende nobis, Domine, misericordiam tuam.

℣. Show us, O Lord, your mercy.

℟. Et salutare tuum da nobis.

℟. And grant us your salvation.

℣. Domine, exaudi orationem meam.

℣. O Lord, hear my prayer.

℟. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

℟. And let my cry come to you.

℣. Dominus vobiscum.

℣. The Lord be with you.

℟. Et cum spiritu tuo.

℟. And with your spirit.

Oremus.

Let us pray. Hear us, holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God, and be pleased to send your holy Angel from heaven to guard, cherish, protect, visit and defend all who dwell in this house. Through Christ our Lord.

℟. Amen.

℟. Amen.

℣. Introibo ad altare Dei.

℣. I will go in to the altar of God.

℟. Ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam.

℟. To God, who gives joy to my youth.

Psalm 42 follows. It is omitted in Masses for the Dead and in Passiontide.

Iudica me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta: ab homine iniquo et doloso erue me.

Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an unholy nation; rescue me from the unjust and deceitful man.

℟. Quia tu es, Deus, fortitudo mea: quare me repulisti, et quare tristis incedo, dum affligit me inimicus?

℟. For you, O God, are my strength; why have you cast me off, and why do I go about in sorrow while the enemy afflicts me?

Emitte lucem tuam et veritatem tuam: ipsa me deduxerunt, et adduxerunt in montem sanctum tuum, et in tabernacula tua.

Send out your light and your truth; they have led me and brought me to your holy mountain and into your dwelling places.

℟. And I will go in to the altar of God, to God who gives joy to my youth.

Confitebor tibi in cithara, Deus, Deus meus: quare tristis es, anima mea, et quare conturbas me?

I will praise you on the harp, O God, my God. Why are you sad, my soul, and why do you trouble me?

℟. Spera in Deo, quoniam adhuc confitebor illi: salutare vultus mei, et Deus meus.

℟. Hope in God, for I will yet praise him, the salvation of my countenance and my God.

Let us pray. Take away from us our iniquities, we beseech you, O Lord, that we may be worthy to enter the Holy of Holies with pure minds. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

CredoThe Creed

Credo

The Creed

Said on Sundays and certain feasts. All kneel at "Et incarnatus est."

Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem caeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages; God from God, light from light, true God from true God; begotten, not made; of one substance with the Father, through whom all things were made.

Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven.

ET INCARNATUS EST DE SPIRITU SANCTO EX MARIA VIRGINE: ET HOMO FACTUS EST.

AND WAS INCARNATE BY THE HOLY SPIRIT OF THE VIRGIN MARY, AND WAS MADE MAN.

He was also crucified for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried. On the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and of his kingdom there will be no end.

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who together with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified; who spoke through the Prophets.

Et unam, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum. Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum. ✠ Et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen.

And in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. And I await the resurrection of the dead, ✠ and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Offertory

The Mass of the Faithful begins.

℣. Dominus vobiscum.

℣. The Lord be with you.

℟. Et cum spiritu tuo.

℟. And with your spirit.

The priest says "Oremus" and reads the Offertory verse of the day. He then offers the host:

Chalice with paten
Chalice with paten

Amen.

Receive, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, this spotless host, which I, your unworthy servant, offer to you, my living and true God, for my countless sins, offenses and negligences, for all here present, and for all faithful Christians living and dead, that it may profit me and them for salvation unto life everlasting. Amen.

Pouring wine and a little water into the chalice:

Deus, ✠ qui humanae substantiae dignitatem mirabiliter condidisti, et mirabilius reformasti: da nobis per huius aquae et vini mysterium, eius divinitatis esse consortes, qui humanitatis nostrae fieri dignatus est particeps, Iesus Christus, Filius tuus, Dominus noster: Qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus: per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

O God, ✠ who wonderfully created the dignity of human nature and still more wonderfully restored it, grant that through the mystery of this water and wine we may share in the divinity of him who was pleased to share in our humanity, Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Offering the chalice:

Amen.

We offer you, O Lord, the chalice of salvation, beseeching your mercy that it may rise with a sweet fragrance before your divine majesty, for our salvation and for that of the whole world. Amen.

In spiritu humilitatis, et in animo contrito suscipiamur a te, Domine: et sic fiat sacrificium nostrum in conspectu tuo hodie, ut placeat tibi, Domine Deus.

In a spirit of humility and with a contrite heart may we be received by you, O Lord; and may our sacrifice be so offered in your sight this day that it may please you, O Lord God.

Come, O Sanctifier, almighty and eternal God, and bless ✠ this sacrifice prepared for your holy name.

The cruets
The cruets

I will wash my hands among the innocent, and I will go around your altar, O Lord, that I may hear the voice of praise and tell of all your wonders.

O Lord, I have loved the beauty of your house and the place where your glory dwells. Do not destroy my soul with the wicked, O God, nor my life with men of blood,

Pes meus stetit in directo: in ecclesiis benedicam te, Domine.

in whose hands are iniquities, whose right hand is full of bribes. But I have walked in my innocence; redeem me and have mercy on me. My foot has stood on level ground; in the assemblies I will bless you, O Lord.

Amen.

Bowing at the center:

Amen.

Receive, O holy Trinity, this offering which we make to you in memory of the passion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ our Lord, and in honor of blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, these Saints and all the Saints, that it may bring honor to them and salvation to us, and that they whom we remember on earth may be pleased to intercede for us in heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Turning to the people:

It is truly right and just, fitting and profitable to salvation, that we should always and everywhere give thanks to you, holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God, through Christ our Lord.

Te igitur, clementissime Pater, per Iesum Christum Filium tuum Dominum nostrum, supplices rogamus ac petimus, uti accepta habeas, et benedicas, haec ✠ dona, haec ✠ munera, haec ✠ sancta sacrificia illibata.

Therefore, most merciful Father, we humbly pray and beseech you through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord, to accept and bless these ✠ gifts, these ✠ offerings, these ✠ holy and unblemished sacrifices,

which we offer you first of all for your holy Catholic Church: be pleased to grant her peace, to guard, unite and govern her throughout the whole world, together with your servant N. our Pope, N. our Bishop, and all who hold the orthodox, catholic and apostolic faith.

Commemoration of the living.

Remember, O Lord, your servants N. and N., and all here present, whose faith and devotion are known to you, for whom we offer, or who offer to you, this sacrifice of praise for themselves and all their own, for the redemption of their souls, for the hope of their salvation and safety; and who pay their vows to you, the eternal, living and true God.

Solemn Mass: the Elevation of the Host

Who, on the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands, and with eyes lifted up to heaven, to you, God, his almighty Father, giving thanks to you, he blessed ✠ it, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat of this, all of you.

HOC EST ENIM CORPUS MEUM.

FOR THIS IS MY BODY.

The priest genuflects, elevates the Sacred Host, and genuflects again. The bell is rung three times. Adore in silence, or say: My Lord and my God. From now until the ablutions the priest keeps each thumb and forefinger joined, since they have touched the Sacred Host.

In like manner, after they had supped, taking also this excellent chalice into his holy and venerable hands, and again giving thanks to you, he blessed ✠ it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and drink of this, all of you.

HIC EST ENIM CALIX SANGUINIS MEI, NOVI ET AETERNI TESTAMENTI: MYSTERIUM FIDEI: QUI PRO VOBIS ET PRO MULTIS EFFUNDETUR IN REMISSIONEM PECCATORUM.

FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, THE MYSTERY OF FAITH, WHICH SHALL BE SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY UNTO THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.

Haec quotiescumque feceritis, in mei memoriam facietis.

As often as you do these things, you shall do them in memory of me.

Mindful therefore, O Lord, we your servants, and with us your holy people, of the blessed passion of this same Christ your Son our Lord, of his resurrection from the dead, and of his glorious ascension into heaven, offer to your excellent majesty, from your own gifts and bounty, a pure ✠ victim, a holy ✠ victim, a spotless ✠ victim, the holy ✠ Bread of eternal life and the Chalice ✠ of everlasting salvation.

Be pleased to look upon them with a gracious and serene countenance, and to accept them as you were pleased to accept the gifts of your just servant Abel, the sacrifice of our patriarch Abraham, and that which your high priest Melchisedech offered you, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim.

Supplices te rogamus, omnipotens Deus: iube haec perferri per manus sancti Angeli tui in sublime altare tuum, in conspectu divinae maiestatis tuae: ut quotquot ex hac altaris participatione sacrosanctum Filii tui Cor ✠ pus, et San ✠ guinem sumpserimus, omni benedictione caelesti et gratia repleamur. Per eundem Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

We humbly beseech you, almighty God, command that these be carried by the hands of your holy Angel to your altar on high, in the sight of your divine majesty, so that as many of us as, by sharing in this altar, shall receive the most holy Body ✠ and Blood ✠ of your Son may be filled with every heavenly blessing and grace. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Commemoration of the dead.

Amen.

Remember also, O Lord, your servants N. and N., who have gone before us with the sign of faith and sleep the sleep of peace. To them, O Lord, and to all who rest in Christ, grant, we beseech you, a place of refreshment, light and peace. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Striking his breast and saying the first three words aloud:

Nobis quoque peccatoribus famulis tuis, de multitudine miserationum tuarum sperantibus, partem aliquam et societatem donare digneris, cum tuis sanctis Apostolis et Martyribus: cum Ioanne, Stephano, Matthia, Barnaba, Ignatio, Alexandro, Marcellino, Petro, Felicitate, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucia, Agnete, Caecilia, Anastasia, et omnibus Sanctis tuis: intra quorum nos consortium, non aestimator meriti, sed veniae, quaesumus, largitor admitte. Per Christum Dominum nostrum.

To us sinners also, your servants, who hope in the multitude of your mercies, be pleased to grant some part and fellowship with your holy Apostles and Martyrs: with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicity, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia and all your Saints; into whose company admit us, we beseech you, not weighing our merits but granting us pardon. Through Christ our Lord.

Per quem haec omnia, Domine, semper bona creas, sancti ✠ ficas, vivi ✠ ficas, bene ✠ dicis, et praestas nobis.

Oremus. Praeceptis salutaribus moniti, et divina institutione formati, audemus dicere:

Let us pray. Taught by saving precepts and formed by divine instruction, we dare to say:

Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie. Et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation.

℟. Sed libera nos a malo.

℟. But deliver us from evil.

℣. Amen.

℣. Amen.

Deliver us, we beseech you, O Lord, from all evils, past, present and to come; and by the intercession of the blessed and glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with your blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, Andrew and all the Saints, ✠ graciously grant peace in our days, that aided by your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all disturbance.

Through the same Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God,

Haec commixtio et consecratio Corporis et Sanguinis Domini nostri Iesu Christi fiat accipientibus nobis in vitam aeternam. Amen.

The Agnus Dei

Striking his breast at each "miserere nobis" and "dona nobis pacem." In Masses for the Dead, "dona eis requiem" is said, and "sempiternam" the third time; the priest then does not strike his breast, since he is praying for the dead rather than for himself.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis.

Lamb of God, who take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis.

Lamb of God, who take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, who take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Domine Iesu Christe, qui dixisti Apostolis tuis: Pacem relinquo vobis, pacem meam do vobis: ne respicias peccata mea, sed fidem Ecclesiae tuae; eamque secundum voluntatem tuam pacificare et coadunare digneris: Qui vivis et regnas Deus per omnia saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles, "Peace I leave you, my peace I give you": look not on my sins but on the faith of your Church, and be pleased to give her peace and unity according to your will, who live and reign, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who by the will of the Father, with the cooperation of the Holy Spirit, gave life to the world by your death: deliver me by this your most holy Body and Blood from all my iniquities and from every evil; make me always cling to your commandments, and never let me be parted from you, who with the same God the Father and the Holy Spirit live and reign, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Amen.

Let not the receiving of your Body, Lord Jesus Christ, which I, unworthy, presume to take, turn to my judgment and condemnation; but in your loving kindness may it be a safeguard and healing remedy for soul and body, who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

℣. Dominus vobiscum.

℣. The Lord be with you.

℟. Et cum spiritu tuo.

℟. And with your spirit.

℣. ✠ Initium sancti Evangelii secundum Ioannem.

℣. ✠ The beginning of the holy Gospel according to John.

℟. Gloria tibi, Domine.

℟. Glory to you, O Lord.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was made nothing that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men; and the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

Fuit homo missus a Deo, cui nomen erat Ioannes.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.

That was the true light, which enlightens every man coming into this world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own did not receive him. But to all who received him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

All genuflect.

AND THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us; and we saw his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

℟. Deo gratias.

℟. Thanks be to God.

Said kneeling after Low Mass: the Ave Maria three times, then the Salve Regina and the prayers that follow.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum; benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

℟. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. (ter)

℟. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. (three times)

O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

En ego, o bone et dulcissime Iesu, ante conspectum tuum genibus me provolvo, ac maximo animi ardore te oro atque obtestor, ut meum in cor vividos fidei, spei et caritatis sensus, atque veram peccatorum meorum paenitentiam, eaque emendandi firmissimam voluntatem velis imprimere.

Behold, O good and most sweet Jesus, I cast myself on my knees in your sight, and with the most fervent desire of my soul I pray and beseech you to impress upon my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true repentance for my sins, and a most firm resolve to amend them,

Dum magno animi affectu et dolore tua quinque vulnera mecum ipse considero ac mente contemplor, illud prae oculis habens, quod iam in ore ponebat tuo David propheta de te, o bone Iesu: Foderunt manus meas et pedes meos: dinumeraverunt omnia ossa mea.

while with deep affection and sorrow I ponder within myself and contemplate your five wounds, having before my eyes what David the prophet long ago put in your mouth concerning you, O good Jesus: "They have pierced my hands and my feet; they have numbered all my bones."

Missa pro Defunctis

The Mass for the Dead

The Requiem follows the Order of Mass with these changes: Psalm 42 is omitted at the foot of the altar; there is no Gloria or Creed; the water is not blessed at the Offertory; at the Agnus Dei "dona eis requiem" is said, and "sempiternam" the third time; the first prayer before Communion is omitted; the dismissal is "Requiescant in pace"; no blessing is given. The Last Gospel is still read.

Introit.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Ps. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Ierusalem: exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet.

Ps. A hymn befits you, O God, in Sion, and a vow shall be paid to you in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer; to you all flesh shall come.

Gradual.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. V. The just man shall be held in everlasting remembrance; he shall not fear evil tidings.

Tract.

Absolve, Domine, animas omnium fidelium defunctorum ab omni vinculo delictorum. V. Et gratia tua illis succurrente, mereantur evadere iudicium ultionis. V. Et lucis aeternae beatitudine perfrui.

Loose, O Lord, the souls of all the faithful departed from every bond of sin. V. And by the help of your grace may they be found worthy to escape the judgment of vengeance. V. And to enjoy the happiness of eternal light.

Missa pro DefunctisThe Mass for the Dead

Sequence. Dies irae.

Dies irae, dies illa,
Solvet saeclum in favilla:
Teste David cum Sibylla.

That day of wrath, that day
will dissolve the world in ashes,
as David and the Sibyl bear witness.

Quantus tremor est futurus,
Quando iudex est venturus,
Cuncta stricte discussurus!

What trembling there will be
when the Judge shall come
to sift all things strictly!

Tuba mirum spargens sonum
Per sepulcra regionum,
Coget omnes ante thronum.

The trumpet, spreading its wondrous sound
through the tombs of every land,
will summon all before the throne.

Mors stupebit et natura,
Cum resurget creatura,
Iudicanti responsura.

Death and nature will stand amazed
when all creation rises again
to answer to the Judge.

Liber scriptus proferetur,
In quo totum continetur,
Unde mundus iudicetur.

A written book will be brought forth
in which all is contained,
by which the world shall be judged.

Iudex ergo cum sedebit,
Quidquid latet apparebit:
Nil inultum remanebit.

When therefore the Judge is seated,
whatever is hidden will appear;
nothing will remain unpunished.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
Quem patronum rogaturus,
Cum vix iustus sit securus?

What shall I, wretch, say then?
What advocate shall I ask for,
when even the just are scarcely safe?

Rex tremendae maiestatis,
Qui salvandos salvas gratis,
Salva me, fons pietatis.

King of awesome majesty,
who freely save those to be saved,
save me, fount of mercy.

Recordare, Iesu pie,
Quod sum causa tuae viae:
Ne me perdas illa die.

Remember, loving Jesus,
that I am the reason for your journey;
do not lose me on that day.

Quaerens me, sedisti lassus:
Redemisti Crucem passus:
Tantus labor non sit cassus.

Seeking me, you sat down weary;
you redeemed me by suffering the Cross;
let not such labor be in vain.

Iuste iudex ultionis,
Donum fac remissionis
Ante diem rationis.

Just Judge of vengeance,
grant the gift of forgiveness
before the day of reckoning.

Ingemisco, tamquam reus:
Culpa rubet vultus meus:
Supplicanti parce, Deus.

I groan as one guilty;
my face blushes for my fault;
spare your suppliant, O God.

Qui Mariam absolvisti,
Et latronem exaudisti,
Mihi quoque spem dedisti.

You who absolved Mary
and heard the thief's prayer
have given hope to me as well.

Preces meae non sunt dignae:
Sed tu bonus fac benigne,
Ne perenni cremer igne.

My prayers are not worthy,
but in your goodness deal kindly with me,
that I may not burn in everlasting fire.

Inter oves locum praesta,
Et ab haedis me sequestra,
Statuens in parte dextra.

Give me a place among the sheep,
and set me apart from the goats,
placing me at your right hand.

Confutatis maledictis,
Flammis acribus addictis:
Voca me cum benedictis.

When the accursed are confounded
and given over to the bitter flames,
call me with the blessed.

Oro supplex et acclinis,
Cor contritum quasi cinis:
Gere curam mei finis.

Kneeling and bowed I pray,
my heart crushed as if to ashes;
take care of my last end.

Lacrimosa dies illa,
Qua resurget ex favilla
Iudicandus homo reus.
Huic ergo parce, Deus:

Tearful will be that day
when from the ashes shall rise
guilty man to be judged.
Spare him then, O God.

Pie Iesu Domine,
Dona eis requiem. Amen.

Loving Lord Jesus,
grant them rest. Amen.

Missa pro DefunctisThe Mass for the Dead

Offertory.

Domine Iesu Christe, Rex gloriae, libera animas omnium fidelium defunctorum de poenis inferni, et de profundo lacu: libera eas de ore leonis, ne absorbeat eas tartarus, ne cadant in obscurum: sed signifer sanctus Michael repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam: Quam olim Abrahae promisisti, et semini eius.

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the deep pit; deliver them from the lion's mouth, that hell may not swallow them up, that they may not fall into darkness; but let the standard-bearer Saint Michael bring them into the holy light, which you once promised to Abraham and to his seed.

℣. Sacrifices and prayers of praise we offer you, O Lord; receive them on behalf of the souls we remember today. Make them, O Lord, pass over from death to life, which you once promised to Abraham and to his seed.

Agnus Dei.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona eis requiem. (bis)

Lamb of God, who take away the sins of the world, grant them rest. (twice)

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine: Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es. V. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es.

May eternal light shine upon them, O Lord, with your Saints for ever, for you are merciful. V. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them, with your Saints for ever, for you are merciful.

Dismissal.

℣. Requiescant in pace.

Missa pro DefunctisThe Mass for the Dead

The Absolution. After a funeral Mass, the priest stands at the coffin or catafalque while the choir sings:

Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna, in die illa tremenda: Quando caeli movendi sunt et terra: Dum veneris iudicare saeculum per ignem.

Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death on that dreadful day, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved, when you come to judge the world by fire.

℣. I am made to tremble, and I fear, when the judgment shall come and the wrath to come, when the heavens and the earth shall be moved.

℣. Dies illa, dies irae, calamitatis et miseriae, dies magna et amara valde. Dum veneris iudicare saeculum per ignem.

℣. That day, a day of wrath, of calamity and misery, a great and exceedingly bitter day, when you come to judge the world by fire.

℣. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis.

℣. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

The coffin is sprinkled and incensed. As the body is carried from the church:

In paradisum deducant te Angeli: in tuo adventu suscipiant te Martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem. Chorus Angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere aeternam habeas requiem.

May the Angels lead you into paradise; may the Martyrs receive you at your coming and bring you into the holy city Jerusalem. May the choir of Angels receive you, and with Lazarus, who once was poor, may you have eternal rest.

Sacramentum PaenitentiaePrayers for Confession

Sacramentum Paenitentiae

Prayers for Confession

Before confession, ask the Holy Spirit for light, examine your conscience honestly, and be sorry for your sins with a firm purpose of amendment.

Entering the confessional, make the sign of the cross and say:

Benedic mihi, Pater, quia peccavi.

Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.

Say how long it has been since your last confession, confess your sins, and listen to the priest's counsel and penance. Then make an act of contrition:

Deus meus, ex toto corde paenitet me omnium meorum peccatorum, eaque detestor, quia peccando, non solum poenas a te iuste statutas promeritus sum, sed praesertim quia offendi te, summum bonum, ac dignum qui super omnia diligaris. Ideo firmiter propono, adiuvante gratia tua, de cetero me non peccaturum peccandique occasiones proximas fugiturum. Amen.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

The priest gives absolution:

Dominus noster Iesus Christus te absolvat; et ego auctoritate ipsius te absolvo ab omni vinculo excommunicationis et interdicti, in quantum possum et tu indiges. Deinde ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis, in nomine Patris, ✠ et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

May our Lord Jesus Christ absolve you; and by his authority I absolve you from every bond of excommunication and interdict, so far as I am able and you have need. Then I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father, ✠ and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Passio Domini nostri Iesu Christi, merita beatae Mariae Virginis et omnium Sanctorum, quidquid boni feceris et mali sustinueris, sint tibi in remissionem peccatorum, augmentum gratiae et praemium vitae aeternae. Amen.

May the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merits of the Blessed Virgin Mary and of all the Saints, whatever good you do and whatever evil you endure, gain for you the forgiveness of sins, an increase of grace, and the reward of everlasting life. Amen.

After confession, give thanks to God and say your penance promptly.

The server says the Confiteor, as at Mass. The priest turns to the people:

Misereatur vestri omnipotens Deus, et, dimissis peccatis vestris, perducat vos ad vitam aeternam.

May almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life.

℟. Amen.

℟. Amen.

May the almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, ✠ absolution and remission of your sins.

℟. Amen.

℟. Amen.

Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccata mundi.

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world.

(ter)

℟. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof; but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed. (three times)

Corpus Domini nostri Iesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam. Amen.

May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ keep your soul unto life everlasting. Amen.

Returning to the altar, the priest says:

O sacrum convivium, in quo Christus sumitur: recolitur memoria passionis eius: mens impletur gratia: et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur.

O sacred banquet, in which Christ is received, the memory of his Passion is renewed, the soul is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.

℣. Panem de caelo praestitisti eis.

℣. You have given them bread from heaven.

℟. Omne delectamentum in se habentem.

℟. Containing in itself all sweetness.

℣. Domine, exaudi orationem meam.

℣. O Lord, hear my prayer.

℟. Et clamor meus ad te veniat.

℣. Dominus vobiscum.

℣. The Lord be with you.

℟. Et cum spiritu tuo.

℟. And with your spirit.

Oremus.

Let us pray. O God, who under a wonderful Sacrament have left us a memorial of your Passion, grant us so to venerate the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood that we may always feel within us the fruit of your redemption, who live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

℟. Amen.

℟. Amen.

In Paschaltide "Alleluia" is added to the antiphon, versicle and response, and this prayer is said instead:

Spiritum nobis, Domine, tuae caritatis infunde: ut, quos sacramentis paschalibus satiasti, tua facias pietate concordes. Per Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum Filium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate eiusdem Spiritus Sancti Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum.

Pour into us, O Lord, the Spirit of your love, that those whom you have fed with the paschal sacraments may by your goodness be of one mind. Through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the same Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Having replaced the ciborium in the tabernacle, the priest blesses the people:

Benedictio Dei omnipotentis, Patris, et Filii, ✠ et Spiritus Sancti, descendat super vos et maneat semper.

May the blessing of almighty God, the Father, and the Son, ✠ and the Holy Spirit, come down upon you and remain for ever.

O salutaris Hostia,
Quae caeli pandis ostium:
Bella premunt hostilia,
Da robur, fer auxilium.

O saving Victim,
who open the gate of heaven:
hostile wars press upon us;
give strength, bring help.

Uni trinoque Domino
Sit sempiterna gloria,
Qui vitam sine termino
Nobis donet in patria. Amen.

To the one and triune Lord
be glory everlasting,
who grants us life without end
in our true homeland. Amen.

Prayers or hymns may follow. Before the blessing, all sing:

Tantum ergo Sacramentum
Veneremur cernui:
Et antiquum documentum
Novo cedat ritui:
Praestet fides supplementum
Sensuum defectui.

Bowing low, then, let us venerate
so great a Sacrament;
let the old law give way
to the new rite;
let faith supply
what the senses fail to grasp.

Salus, honor, virtus quoque
Sit et benedictio:

Let us pray. O God, who under a wonderful Sacrament have left us a memorial of your Passion, grant us, we beseech you, so to venerate the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood that we may always feel within us the fruit of your redemption, who live and reign for ever and ever.

℟. Amen.

℟. Amen.

In Paschaltide "Alleluia" is added to the versicle and response. The priest blesses the people with the monstrance in silence; the bell is rung. Then all repeat the Divine Praises after him:

Benedictus Deus. Benedictum Nomen Sanctum eius. Benedictus Iesus Christus, verus Deus et verus homo. Benedictum Nomen Iesu. Benedictum Cor eius sacratissimum. Benedictus Sanguis eius pretiosissimus. Benedictus Iesus in sanctissimo altaris Sacramento.

Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste Spouse. Blessed be God in his Angels and in his Saints.

As the Blessed Sacrament is returned to the tabernacle:

Adoremus in aeternum sanctissimum Sacramentum.

Let us adore for ever the most holy Sacrament.

Laudate Dominum, omnes gentes: laudate eum, omnes populi.

Praise the Lord, all you nations; praise him, all you peoples. For his mercy is confirmed upon us, and the truth of the Lord remains for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
