Sources & Permissions

How to read this page
This register distinguishes the identification of a source from verification of permission to reproduce it. It covers sources identified in the supplied project files and handoff; it is not a statement that every listed source is currently published on the website.
Pending means that the evidence needed for a final permission or public-domain determination has not yet been recorded. It is not a license, a fair-use conclusion, or clearance to publish.
Source register
| Material | Identified source or use | Current status | Remaining verification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historical Roman Breviary and Missale Romanum texts | 1954 framework; exact edition and publication details not yet established for every reproduced passage. | Pending edition-specific rights review. | Identify each printed edition; distinguish historical Latin from later additions, translations, notes and transcriptions. |
| Divinum Officium material | Supplied do_source.zip and do_tempora_added.zip; Latin and English files used in the project. | Source identified; applicable license and required notices not yet verified. | Locate the authoritative license for the precise source revision; document contributors, translation provenance and any conditions. The supplied archive contained no obvious license/readme file in the filename check. |
| Douay–Rheims Bible | Referenced by the Breviary page; DR bible.txt was identified in the handoff’s source history. | Exact edition/transcription pending. | Establish which edition and digital transcription are reproduced and document the applicable U.S. public-domain basis or license. |
| Geneva Bible, 1599 | Named in the existing Breviary copyright notice. | Use and edition pending verification. | Locate the passages actually used; distinguish the historical translation from modern editorial or digital additions. |
| Catholic Public Domain Version | Existing page links to sacredbible.org/catholic; supplied catholic public domain bible.pdf identified in source history. | Link confirmed; reproduction and rights statement pending. | Verify the actual version used and preserve its authoritative rights statement. A title alone is not permission evidence. |
| Marquess of Bute, Roman Breviary translation | Assumption comparisons identify Volume III, Summer, printed pp. 823 and 827. | Bibliographic and rights verification pending. | Identify publication year, edition, publisher and any later revision. Clearly distinguish exact transcriptions from adapted English. |
| Joseph Connelly, Hymns of the Roman Liturgy (1955) | Assumption hymn comparison: hymns 130–132, printed pp. 218–223; p. 70 used for a parallel expression. | Comparison source confirmed; republication rights not cleared. | Use as a comparison reference. Do not label project English as a verbatim Connelly transcription. Public availability of the PDF does not establish reuse permission. |
| Calendar and martyrology material | Ordo_1931_Katowice.pdf; Ordo_1952_Gniezno.pdf; Ordo_1953_Gniezno.pdf; Ordo_1954_Gniezno.pdf; martyrology_1954.json and paired text files. | Input files identified; editions and publication permissions pending. | Record authors, publishers, dates, translation origins and licenses. Distinguish calendar facts from copied prose, images and editorial arrangement. |
| Fonts and other software | Uploaded pages request EB Garamond, Source Serif 4 and Source Sans 3 from Google Fonts; local scripts include calendar_mini.js. | Font and code licenses require version-specific documentation. | Retain the licenses and attribution notices for the actual font files and borrowed code. An open-source label does not replace license compliance. |
| Project Liturgy contributions | Original commentary, editorial selection, project prose translations and implementation, where protectable. | Rights depend on authorship, provenance and third-party contributions. | Limit ownership claims to rights actually held. AI-assisted output is not automatically protected in its entirety. Identify a reuse license only after the operator chooses it. |
Translations and text verification
A translation may have a different copyright status from its underlying Latin. Source-checked project translations should be labeled as project translations; they should not be attributed as verbatim published translations unless they actually reproduce that edition’s wording.
The Assumption First Vespers, Matins and Lauds hymn comparisons are recorded separately in the project’s verification checklist. These comparisons establish the scope of textual review, not permission to republish the comparison source or certification of the complete office. The First Vespers doxology retains its recorded printed-confirmation limitation.
Public-domain material and original contributions
Project Liturgy does not claim ownership of public-domain material. Any rights in protectable original contributions do not extend to the underlying public-domain text. A source’s availability online, possession of a scan, or inclusion in an archive is not evidence of permission by itself.
Under U.S. copyright law, use of another person’s protected work needs a license, permission, or an applicable legal exception; public-domain works can be used without copyright permission. The relevant facts must be established for each source. See the U.S. Copyright Office’s explanation. Status in other countries may differ.
Links to outside resources
The website links to services including Divinum Officium, divineoffice.org, universalis.com, ibreviary.com, the Diocese of Wheeling–Charleston, drbo.org, sacredbible.org, masstimes.org and canonlaw.ninja. A link is not a claim to their content, permission to reproduce it, or a statement of affiliation. The Catechism lookup opens an external paragraph page; that linking feature does not itself reproduce the Catechism text.
Permissions and corrections
For proposed reuse, identify the specific passage, file or asset and its applicable source notice. See Terms of Use for the approved treatment of Project Liturgy’s own material. Do not assume that permission covering one source extends to the entire site.
If you believe a notice is incomplete or content has been used without the necessary permission, contact admin@projectliturgy.org with the page address, material involved, rights-holder information and supporting evidence so the issue can be reviewed.
Additional resources
The Confession guide includes the short examination used in the Breviary and a transcription of Rev. Donald F. Miller's Examination of Conscience for Adults. The supplied PDF identifies original publication in 1956 and an imprimatur dated April 7, 1959, and states that it is free of known copyright restrictions. Independent confirmation of that rights statement remains pending. Editorial context is distinguished from the historical text.
OCIA pages use the USCCB's public initiation guidance and 2024 national statutes as references, together with the 1972 Latin Ordo initiationis christianae adultorum. The 2024 Handbook on the Catechetical Accompaniment Process is a reference source, not material offered here as an openly licensed republication. Public access to these documents does not establish public-domain status.
The altar photograph was supplied for the OCIA pages. Its photographer and reproduction permission should be recorded before making any wider licensing claim for the image.
